What is "Security Layering," and why is it important?
Video Transcript:
"Welcome back for this week's Tech Tip. Today we're going to talk about "security layering."
"I get asked all the time: 'Why do I need antivirus on my computer, and a firewall and a spam filter and and and... why do I need it all? I paid for this device - why do I need all of this?'
"Well, there are exploits and there are things that happen. You could have a code issue in your firewall, or an antivirus could miss something.
"We have it layered so that hopefully when this one has a hole the other will block that hole while we get it patched and updated.
"That's one reason.
"They also serve different purposes. A lot of firewalls have antivirus filtering built in, but it's good to add the application layer in case somebody comes in behind the firewall with a virus.
"One of the new things that we're talking to folks about is DNS filtering.
"When you go to google.com or amazon.com you have to ask a DNS server: 'How do I get there?' and the DNS server gives you an IP.
"If you click on a link in an email that takes you to a malicious website, the DNS filter will actually say - "Hey! That's a bad sight!" and won't even give your computer the ability to go there.
"It's another layer further up in the stream to try and prevent malicious attacks and malware from spreading to your machine.
"So take a look at DNS filtering, talk to your IT folks or us about it, and we'll be happy to help.
"Talk to you next week."
